    Welcome Back to School

This is the image for the news article titled Welcome Back to SchoolWelcome to the 2016-2017 school year!

I am excited to be the new principal. I started at Kimball ten years ago as a third grade teacher, taught fourth grade for two of those years, and was the Assistant Principal the last three years.

I ask for your support as I begin this new chapter. I will make it my mission that every child who walks in the door at Kimball feels loved, supported and challenged. My pledge to the community is to listen to all voices, form partnerships that will benefit children and families, and work alongside you to make Kimball an even better school.

I think you will find the staff at Kimball to be smart, caring and dedicated. Join me in welcoming our newest additions. Assistant Principal Avery Smith comes to us from Gatewood Elementary in West Seattle. Deana Bensley and Maureen Lange join our Special Education Team. There are 3 new classroom teachers as well: Alicia McKean in Third Grade, Chandra Reinke in Kindergarten, and James Milne in Fourth Grade. Our new Special Education Instructional Assistants are Melanie Mitchell and Kati Gratz. Khadija Ladd, who came to Kimball last spring, is back full time.

I am looking forward to meeting many of our new Kindergarteners and their parents at the Jump Start Program which begins August 22 at 9 a.m. By the last day of Jump Start, I expect the kids will be eager to hit the ground running on the first day of school.

I look forward to seeing all returning students and families on or before the first day of school, which is September 7th for first through fifth graders.

School begins at 7:55 and ends at 2:05.

As partners, we share the responsibility for our children’s success and I want you to know that the Kimball staff will do our very best to carry out our responsibilities. I ask that you guide and support your child’s learning by ensuring that he or she:

    1. Gets a good night sleep, and arrives to school on time, ready for the day’s learning.

    2. Reads daily to develop a love for reading and to improve literacy skills.

    3. Shares school experiences with you so that you are aware of his/her school life.

    4. Knows that you expect him or her to succeed in school and go on to college

Please consider joining our PTSA and our Family Engagement Action Team (or FEAT). Our students can greatly benefit from your involvement and contributions. Information about joining PTSA or FEAT can be found here or by visiting the main office, which is now open 8-4 daily. Call the main office at 206 252-7280 if you have any questions or need assistance.

Our Kindergarten Potluck is on Thursday, August 25th from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Bilingual Family Night will be on September 15th from 5:30-7:00 p.m.

Title I Curriculum Night and Ice Cream Social is Thursday, September 29th from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Teachers will provide a yearly overview of what will be happening in classrooms.

I look forward to meeting our new children and families and working together with everyone to make this an exciting and productive year.

    Jim Buckwalter

    Principal of Kimball
