At Kimball, we know that reading with young children is one of the very best ways to foster strong reading skills and a love of literature. That’s why we send a different book home with every Kindergartener, every day from the first full week of school till the start of Winter Break in December.

We Call This Program Book A Day!

The intention is for someone at home– a parent, grandparent, older sibling or babysitter– to read all or part of the book with the kindergartener. When they return the book the next day, they get a new book. That’s all there is to it!

The books cover a very wide range of genres, length and reading levels. While an individual child may find a particular book of little interest, the next student receiving the very same book may find it fascinating. Whether it’s a fairy tale or a funny one, non-fiction or biography, we expect there’s a book to ignite every child’s imagination.

This program wouldn’t be possible without the financial support of our wonderful PTSA or the time put in by parent volunteers. Each year we ask 3- 5 Kindergarten parents to help sort the books and get them ready for the next day. If you think you could commit an hour or two, one or twice a week to completing this important work, please do let us know!
